We’ve got some detective work to do. πŸ•΅πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

As soon as summer hits, all the players we’ve been tracking scatter like a bag of marbles on a church basement floor.

Some join MLR academy squads. Others link up with local sevens teams. A few head overseas for EIRA tours.

Bottom line: this time of year is disjointedβ€”but there’s still great rugby happening all over the place. We’ll do our best to keep you in the loop and make this gigantic country feel just a little bit smaller.

And if there’s rugby action near you that deserves coverage, don’t be shyβ€”drop us a note at [email protected].

MLR Playoff Update

Utah Warriors 23 – 21 Seattle Seawolves

The Warriors exploded out to a 17–0 lead, then held on as Seattle stormed back. Jordan Trainor scored twice, D’Angelo Leuila hit two clutch penalties, and the defense held strong when they needed to.

Utah will host the Western Conference Final vs the Houston Sabercats this Saturday.

Houston 27 – 21 LA RFC

Houston outlasted a lengthy weather delay to finally snag their first playoff win in franchise history. Pitaβ€―Anae‑Ahβ€―Sue scored two, Rufus McLean made a real impact, and Max Schumacher kept things ticking from the 10 position.

They’ll take on the Utah Warriors this Saturday in Herriman at Zions Bank Stadium.

Chicago Hounds 27 – 16 Old Glory DC

Tight at halftime. Then Chicago took over.

The Hounds have earned a crack at the Free Jacks in the Eastern final.

New England 32 – 10 Miami

No drama here. The defending champs came out sharp and never let Miami get momentum.

New England played fast, clean, and physicalβ€”and now they’re one win away from another shot at the MLR title.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡± Texas action

Texas has flipped the switch from 15s to sevensβ€”and it’s already heating up.

Two weekends, two tournaments, two different champs.

Round one kicked off in San Antonio on May 31, with a solid showing from programs like the Huns, Rock Rugby, Waco, Kingwood, Faith Family Academy, and the Katy Barbarians. The Barbarians took home the trophy behind standout play from captain Lucas Martinelli, who was a menace around the breakdown and led from the front in a 19–7 win over the host team.

Round two moved to Sabercat Stadium on June 8, and the wind was the main character. In blustery conditions, Saint Thomas found the edgeβ€”literally and figurativelyβ€”grinding out a 14–7 win over the Barbarians in the final.

Sevens brings out a little more parity than we saw during the 15s season. On any given weekend, anyone can winβ€”and that’s part of the appeal. It’s a great platform for building confidence, gaining experience, and developing chemistry among players who might not share the field during the spring.

Plenty more sevens still to come on the summer calendar. Stay tuned.

Sabercats Go 3–0 at UBS Invitational

Sabercat Academy’s U18 squad continued their summer campaign with a clean sweep at the UBS 15s Rugby Invitational, held June 14–15 in Hendersonville, TN and hosted by Panther Rugby Academy.

The four-team event included NOLA Gold Academy, NC All-Stars, Panther Academy, and the Sabercats. Houston’s U18 side finished the weekend 3–0, defeating:

  • NC All-Stars (35–15)

  • Panther Academy (43–0)

  • NOLA Gold Academy (29–7)

Try scorers over the weekend included:
Paulo Masso and Felipe Edbrooke (Strake Jesuit), Neel Menon and Noah Hudson (Woodlands), Augie Anderson(HCYA Raptors), Elijah Capiro and Hardy Brody, Tate Standridge, and Orin Hart.

Fun fact: The Sabercats roster has players from six different schools and clubs: Barbarians, HCYA Raptors, Strake Jesuit, The Woodlands, Spartans, and St. Thomas Houston.

πŸ’ͺUNSUNG XV

Two more players join the list todayβ€”both from Northeast teams.

We have many more players to add, but we’re waiting on photos and coaches’ quotes.

Also, definitely go ahead and nominate a player if you haven’t already. You can send a brief writeup, coach’s quote, and photo to us here: [email protected] and we’ll give them a shout out in the next available spot.

Sean Carroll, Greenwich (CT)

Sean Carroll | Flanker/Hooker | Greenwich (CT)

πŸ‰Noteworthy: Sean Carroll did whatever the team needed. He started games at both flanker and hooker, happily came off the bench when asked, and even took over throwing duties mid-season. He often organized lineout work before practice and brought a relentless, team-first attitude. When Greenwich needed grit to close out tight games, Sean delivered.

πŸ’¬Coach’s quote: β€œHe’s like the garbage man- he clocks in to work, gets the job done and by the time he clocks out everyone is better than they were before. He does the dirty work and may not always be noticed, but without him everything would be a mess.” -Jamie Everett, Head Coach, Greenwich

Braxton Blind carries the ball in the MA state final.

Braxton Blind | Scrumhalf | BC High (MA)

πŸ‰Noteworthy: Braxton Blind, twin brother to Brennan (#12) and older brother to Colton (#13), quietly steered the ship for BC High all spring. He’s calm, composed, and always in the right spot. His passes are crisp, his support lines are sharp, and he never forces the moment. A steady presence at scrumhalf and a big reason BC High brought home the state title.

πŸ’¬Coach’s quote: β€œI would definitely say Braxton. Primarily because he does all the basics absolutely perfect, nearly all the time. He has a tremendous work ethic. He never looks for glory. He runs absolutely amazing support lines and amazing defensive lines.” -Damian Dowling, backs coach, BC High

Quick Hits πŸ‘Š

  • The National Sevens Youth Championship was held in Cleveland this past weekend. Teams from across the entire country participated, and by all accounts, it was a smashing success.
We did a little digging to learn more about this tournamentβ€”we wanted to make sure we understood what makes it a β€œnational” championship. More on that coming Friday.

  • We’re behind on updating scores in the ranking system. Sorry, summer hit us like a bag of mildewy laundry. But hang tight, we’ll have all the end-of-season scores in there by Monday.

  • We’re considering doing another Fan Rankings poll like we did back in December. Keep an eye on your inbox for that.

That’s a wrap, gang!

This Friday we’ll have more dope rugby stuff to share with you; scores, highlights, stories… all the goods.

If you like this stuff, share it with your friends!

Be well, ruck with gusto, and may your compression shorts always stay in place.
