π Rankings update:
Top 5 Schools
β΅ Charlotte Catholic (NC) | Still holding the top spot after a successful 8-0 campaign and a state title to boot. But their season is complete, and someone is likely to pass them. So enjoy it, Cougars!
βΆ Torrey Pines (CA) | The Falcons move up one spot to take #2. Fitting, as they sit at a perfect 8-0 heading into SoCal semifinals this weekend againstβ¦
β· La Costa Canyon (CA) | Boom. These guys. The Mavericks are rumbling right now. Besides a close loss to Torrey Pines earlier this season, they have a flawless resume. Semifinals loom this weekend and we would not bet against this squad.
βΈ Huskies (NC) | The Huskies fall two spots after losing to Charlotte Catholic in the State Final, combined with the teams above them performing well. Still a terrific season for these lads!
βΉ Orange Lutheran (CA) | Deserving of a brighter spotlight, Olu finds itself in the SoCal semifinals this weekend against Mira Costa. Their record: 5-0. No surprise they round out the top 5.
Club season is so early that we donβt want to make a fuss about the current standings. But early top performers are Woodlands (TX), Boca Raton (FL), Okapi (FL), Red Mountain (AZ), and Celina (TX). Weβll keep ya updated as things heat up.

SoCal Semifinals

Norcal shaping up
Fascinating things happening in NorCal right now. St. Francis, De La Salle, Sacramento Jesuit, and Rio Americano are all chasing the number 1 seed in playoffs. Rio Americano, shockingly, might have the clearest path, but they need help from other teams to lock it in. De La Salle and St. Francis are in strong positions, and Jesuit likely needs to win out, with games against De La Salle and St. Francis still on the schedule.
Bottom line: NorCal is clear as mud and competitive as hell.
NorthEast coming aliveβ¦
Barely.
Weβve had exactly one team from the Northeast play a game so far: Gregory the Great (PA) traveled down to Richmond to face the Richmond Griffins over the weekend. Gregory the Great won it 71-0, so they must have some firepower.
At the end of the day, both sides were just happy to have a game. Weβre still covered in snow up north.
Speaking of Pennsylvania teams, Doylestownβ2025 state champsβ head down to Fort Hunt (VA) tomorrow to kick off their preseason schedule before RugbyPA launches in a few weeks.
Colorado action
Weβve been warned not to let Colorado teams slip off the radar. Noted π«‘
This weekend, thereβs a round robin preseason tourney scheduled at Valor HS (CO). Teams participating are Monarch (CO), Valor (CO), and NCS Falcons (CO).
Valor has a big showdown next weekend with East HS (CO), so this warmup tourney is just what the doctor ordered before that clash.
Florida
Hoo boy! Hereβs the match weβve been waiting for.
Okapi and Boca Raton meet for the first time this season and we donβt exactly know what to expect. Early money is on Okapi for their consistent dominance in the state. But Boca has been pretty dang impressive so far β 4-0 and a 22+ point differential per game.
Whoβs going to take control in the Sunshine State? This weekend will help answer that question.
Texas
Woodlands is off to a flying start, but it was another recent match that got our attention.
The Boks and Barbarians met on Tuesday, with the Barbarians taking it 20β19. We kept hearing that it was played under βunusual circumstances,β so we did a little digging.
Texas Rugby is short on referees. The state is massive. And thereβs a strict 72-hour window for contacting officials. In this case, the referee was contacted roughly 24 hours before kickoff instead of the required 72. Texas Rugby enforced the policy and pulled the assignment, leaving a coach to take the whistle.
The game still happened. But it left a bit of a sour taste.
And from what weβre hearing, this isnβt an isolated frustration. There are questions in Texas around D1 being top-heavy, JV depth being thin, and the sheer grind of travel. Geography is a real factor. Texas isnβt exactly compact.
Itβs worth asking whether a regional split, similar to Californiaβs model, could ease some of that pressure. Fewer four-hour drives. More localized growth. More sustainable referee coverage.
We donβt pretend to have all the answers. But when the pitch to parents starts feeling like, βLetβs spend eight hours in the car and go get whacked 85-0,β buy-in gets tougher.
Just an observation.
Shoot me a note if you have insight on the matter.
In other Texas news: Celina looks very strong. That is all.
ποΈ Puriri Memorial Invitational
ποΈ Feb 20β21 | St. George, UT
Thereβs a lot of meaning behind this one. We reached out to Mikaera Puriri to learn more about the event, and the story runs deeper than a preseason showcase.
What began in 2007 as a simple warm-up weekend in southern Utah has grown into one of the regionβs most anticipated early-season events. Michael Puriri, alongside fellow rugby advocate Jay Day, helped plant the rugby flag in St. George when there wasnβt much rugby to speak of. The annual February gathering stuck, and over time it became a beloved tradition.
The event eventually took the Puriri name to honor Michaelβs father, Ra, who played a major role in growing the game across Utah. After Ra and Michael both passed in recent years, the Invitational became the Puriri Memorial, a tribute to the two men who helped build the game there.
Mikaera, Michaelβs son, once played in the event himself. Today he directs it, carrying forward the work started by his father and grandfather.
And the rugby this year should be excellent.
Herriman, Cavemen, and LCA headline the weekend, with East right there in the mix. Te Mana (formerly Tribal Rugby), Mountain View, and Brighton are building toward league play. Olympus brings a young squad after winning UYR Tier 3 last year. Red Mountain travels in from Arizona, and Kahuku (HI) adds island flair.
The games begin Friday, Feb. 20. (Today)
Thereβs no championship trophy. Itβs not that kind of event. But that doesnβt make the rugby any less competitive. This weekend is loaded with high-octane matchups.

SoCal Semifinals
Torrey Pines vs La Costa Canyon | Sat Feb 21, 1pm PST
πΊ Watch here
You could feel this one coming.
For weeks now, itβs looked like these two were headed for each other. Itβs #2 vs #3 in the Riot rankings, with the SoCal final waiting for the winner.
Torrey Pines has weathered injuries to key players and a brutal SoCal schedule to emerge 8β0 heading into the semifinals. They just keep finding ways to win. The Falcons are balanced and know how to control the tempo. Andrew Taich, Shay Farkash, and Rees Curtis headline the roster, but itβs a full team effort each week. This is a gritty crew.
La Costa Canyonβ¦man, these guys seem to get stronger every week. We knew they had physicality up the wazoo, but recently theyβve been showing off in the finesse department too. Cross-kicks, chip-and-catch scores, clever set piecesβtheyβre doing it all and having fun.
With a spot in the SoCal final on the line, we expect a dogfight. Whoβs going to win is anyoneβs guess. Thatβs how close this game is shaping up to be.
βThis looks to be a proper school boy playoff. We expect them to come right at us, and their 10 has gotten a bit cheeky with his foot. We may have a wrinkle or two ourselves, but our success is a product of adhering to our system. Weβll never stray too far from that.β
Marquee Matchup
Charlotte Cardinals vs San Mateo Wolverines | Sat Feb 21, 6pm PST
πΊ Watch here
The Cardinals and Wolverines meet for their annual cross-country clash. Last year, Charlotte hosted. This year, the Wolverines return the favor and welcome the North Carolina side to NorCal.
For the Cardinals, this is an early barometer for another Nationals push. Their roster is loaded with North Carolina talent, and if you watched the Charlotte Catholic (NC) vs Cathedral Catholic (CA) stream in January, you already know how sharp that region looks right now.
For San Mateo, this is a measuring stick. The NorCal Club Premier Division is no joke. Danville Oaks. SFGG. Granite Bay. Itβs a meat grinder. Hosting a program like Charlotte is a chance to see exactly where they stand before league play begins.
Charlotte has had the edge in previous meetings. But assuming that continues would be careless. The Wolverines are athletic, they play fast, and they donβt shy away from contact. At home, theyβll look to dictate terms.
East meets West. Nationals pedigree on both sides.
But the underlying theme is mutual respect, friendship, and a passion for rugby. Thereβs a strong relationship building between these two coastal programs, and there will be a great feast after the game, regardless of the score.
This one is Canβt Miss material. Tune in tomorrow at 6 PST / 9 EST.
