Spicy quotes 🔥 New rivalries 🏉 Buckle up for this week's HS rugby action.
Hey there, Rugby Rioter!
You hear that?
*dramatic music*
That’s the sound of California HS rugby joining us this week at the Rugby Riot.
We’ve got some great matchups to cover, players to highlight, and even a potential new rivalry to talk about.
Meanwhile, NC has a big game happening this evening between South Meck and Charlotte Catholic.
Gather round, grab a sodeepop, and read on, rugger 👇

📊Rankings System Update:
We said we would try to release our rankings system this week. Well we got close, but there are a few kinks to work out first. We ran hundreds of game simulations to try and find issues with the system. And by golly…there were a few issues. But NEXT WEEK (oh boy, do I even want to say that…). Hang tight — we’ll get this done for you asap.

Louisiana 15s: 8 days (Jan 25th)
Spring 15s: 43 days (March 1st - unofficial start of the season for most)
Carolina Ruggerfest: 43 days (March 1st -2nd)
Gonzaga Classic: 85 days (April 12th)
Midwest Invitational: 99 days (April 26th)
Nationals Tournament: 125 days (May 22nd)

🦙 There’s some drama llama happening over in Ohio rugby. Basically, people aren’t happy with how RugbyOhio has been running the show, and they want new faces involved. But RugbyOhio is taking too long to take action, and patience is running thin, according to Mr. Goff.
🫤 The fires in LA have forced UCLA to cancel the Storer Classic. Even rugby needs to take a back seat sometimes when there are more important things afoot.
Battle in NC Tonight
South Meck and Charlotte Catholic face off in a very important game this evening, Friday - January 17th. (6pm)
This match could shape the pecking order in NC rugby this season. South Meck is surely throwing a few more shovels of coal on the furnace this week after a tough loss to Hough last week. And Charlotte Catholic looks to solidify their ascent to the top 3 in the state. Both teams are playing at a high level — don’t miss this match if you happen to live near Pineville, NC.
And check out our quote of the week below, it’s a doozy 👇

“He could teach a turd how to play rugby. Best rugby coach I know.”

Here’s a roundup of this week’s coverage 👇

Oddball musings, induced by borderline hypothermia.
🏉 Bagpipes and drums = the best recipe for pregame pump-up music.
🏉 It takes exactly one rugby referee to keep 30 muscle-bound dudes in line during a rugby match. Meanwhile in the NFL: Approximately 5 referees frantically dig through a dog pile to decide which team has the ball while a brawl takes place 5 feet away.
🏉 Serious thought: There’s a strong correlation between regional fan base enthusiasm and the success of national sports leagues. Bottom line for rugby — We need a better talent pipeline HS→College→Pro if we are going to reach mainstream status in the USA. If people can’t watch the journey of their homegrown talent from high school to pro, then it’s going to be hard to get buy-in (meaning: eyeballs on screens and butts in seats.)
That’s a wrap, gang!
Next week we’ll have more dope rugby stuff to share with you; scores, highlights, stories, RANKINGS… all the goods.
