Sneak Peek👀 — Rugby Riot Score Ticker

Alright, this is a work in progress, so there may be a few glitches at first. But we wanted to give you a sneak peek at the score ticker we’re building!

Here’s how it works: Every time your coach submits your game score to us, your game will automatically appear in the score ticker for everyone to see. (So coaches, don’t forget to submit those scores.)

Also, big matchups, close games, state finals etc will be highlighted to stand out visually in the ticker.

We thought it would be fun to have an eye catching score ticker for high school rugby games!

Note: We’re going to hide it again after this weekend so we can continue working on it. This truly is a sneak peek. 👇

Upcoming Big Matches

Charlotte Catholic vs. Marvin Ridge

January 9th

Key Points:

  • Charlotte Catholic looks to build on their strong 2-0 start to the season with this match against one of the stronger NC squads.

  • Catholic is in the middle of a rebuilding year — safe to say it’s going well so far. Can they keep the momentum against Marvin Ridge?

  • After opening the season with a dominant win, Marvin Ridge has lost two in a row to high caliber NC teams; Hough and South Meck. How will they respond?

Hough vs. South Meck

January 10th

Key Points:

  • Both teams come into this matchup undefeated, making it the first NC clash of unbeaten squads this season. South Meck has rolled to a 3-0 start, while Hough also sits at 3-0, though two of their wins came via forfeits, giving South Meck the edge in actual game time.

  • Hough’s only game so far was anything but routine. They played nearly 60 minutes with 14 men after an early red card, but still came away with a hard-fought win. Fly-half Max Colson was instrumental, scoring 17 points, while captain Porter Kuebler and others stepped up to steady the ship.

  • The big questions: Can South Meck continue their strong start against last year’s state champs? And can Hough hit their stride after limited action so far?

This matchup has been circled on our calendar for weeks and promises to be a grab-the-popcorn event.

Think you know rugby? Prove it!

The Aussie Raptors execute a nice little chip kick during their friendly match against Cathedral Catholic Dec. 12, 2024

We watched this friendly match between Cathedral Catholic and the Aussie Raptors U16 team and a couple things stood out about the Raptors.

First, these Aussie kids play FAST. The ball moved very quickly out of the ruck, and their defense was a swarming unit.

Second, they did a great job of recognizing where the space was and executing clever plays (like the one shown above) to keep the Cathedral Catholic boys on their heels; your line is advancing fast? We’ll just chip it over you into the soft space. You’re covering the field out wide? We’ll run weak-side several times until you are forced to bring more bodies around the ruck.

Important to note is the fact that Cathedral was missing several key players. This really had the tenor of a friendly match, and both sides made plenty of substitutions - giving lots of kids playing time, which was great to see.

🏉Charlotte Catholic Tops Corinth Holders with Strong Defensive Effort

Charlotte Catholic secured a 35-3 victory against Corinth Holders in a well-fought game played on December 21st.

The Catholic defense was the standout, holding Corinth Holders to just three points with disciplined play, a fast rush, and a sharp kicking game. Offensively, Catholic showcased their firepower with several standout performances:

  • Luke Zehmke and Keane Teeter each scored two tries, including a highlight-reel worthy 50-meter kick-and-chase from Captain and fly-half Vince Keller to Zehmke.

  • The front row — Will Dominguez, Shepherd Shift, and vice-captain Finley Costello — consistently broke tackles with powerful runs.

It was a good game played in good spirits… I’m happy with where the boys are as we head into the break.”

Corinth Holders never backed down, showing grit and determination throughout the match. Captain and fly-half Sawyer Radcliff was their standout player, earning MVP honors for his composure and game management.

On the other side of the holiday break, Catholic will look to build on their defensive strengths and refine their offensive execution. Corinth Holders, despite the result, showed they’re a team with plenty of pluck, and they could surprise some teams as the season progresses.

Oddball musings, induced by borderline hypothermia.

🏉 Did you know that rugby and soccer were both called “football” originally? Soccer was called “Association Football” while rugby was “Rugby Football.” And yet somehow American Football snatched the name. Make it make sense.

🏉 Apparently there was an actual rugby riot at the Rugby School in England in 1797. The kids went berserk, ran away, and camped out on an island until authorities rounded them up. So rugby was chaos from day one…got it.

🏉Back in high school, I once helped start a scrum-down in the middle of a school dance. Shockingly, the ladies did NOT dig it. 10/10 execution, 0/10 social awareness.

That’s a wrap, gang!

Next week we’ll have more dope rugby stuff to share with you; scores, highlights, stories… all the goods.
