Hey there, Rugby Rioter!
Sevens season is wrapping up around the country and most schools/clubs are turning their attention to the upcoming spring 15s season.
Let me get something off my chest.
I CAN’T WAIT FOR SPRING 15s!!
Sevens has its particular charm; big runs, acres of space to utilize, fancy footwork, and open-field tackles. But nothing quite compares with the brutal and beautiful strategy of full-on 15s rugby. Everyone can look like a star in sevens, but 15s is where you really find out who has the fortitude to do the gritty things, and who is making “business decisions”. It’s just a different game.
So let this be your PSA that it’s time to hit the weight room and get more passing and tackling reps in. Because the clock is ticking, my friend, and before you know it, you’ll be fighting for that starting jersey.

Pennsylvania crowns a sevens champ.
We have a sevens champion in Pennsylvania!
Unlike in Ohio, this finals match was not a blowout. But Berks County impressed nonetheless with their relentless and aggressive running style. LaSalle had big hits and great moments too. Give it watch when you can spare 14 minutes (link in the article below).
Calendar Watch 🕒
Spring 15s: 112 days (March 1st - unofficial start of the season)
Gonzaga Classic: 154 days (April 12th)
Midwest Invitational: 168 days (April 26th)
Nationals Tournament: 194 days (May 22nd)
By our calculations, the first 15s game of 2025 will be Gregory the Great Academy (PA) vs. Gonzaga (DC). An annual preseason match held on 2/22/25 in DC. At least, that’s the earliest match we can find scheduled. If you know of another preseason match, let us know so we don’t miss it.
IG Highlight of the WeekOk, I know we highlighted St. Ignatius recently, but this one was hard to pass up. So many questions here… Who’s idea was this? Who won the best costume award? (my vote goes to the gentleman dressed in kingly attire. Nothing like getting trampled by Henry the 8th) Can we organize an annual Halloween costume tournament?? |
Ice Bath Thoughts:
Oddball musings, induced by borderline hypothermia.
🏉Grubber. What a weird word. Sounds like dirty popcorn.
🏉”Falling forward” through a tackle is a great metaphor for life.
🏉Singing fans at a rugby match is a huge motivator as a player. We need to make this more of a thing. I wonder if there would be any interest in a fan songbook with a collection of good cheering songs. I’ve got ideas…
