PLUS: Which freshman went BEAST MODE last week? & more North Carolina and SoCal action📣

Hey there, Rugby Rioter!

👋 Welcome to this week’s edition of Rugby Riot, where we bring you cool high school rugby stuff from around the nation.

We have some very exciting news today…

The Rugby Riot Rankings are LIVE! (see the link below)

Now, I know there will be questions about the system. So instead of writing a bazillion words about it here, you can check out our About The Rankings page where we describe how the rankings work.

P.S. If you want to help this awesome Rugby Riot community grow, do us a solid and share the rankings with your mates, and on social media. Cheers!

So go ahead, click the link below👇 and let us know what you think! (You can send us a note here: [email protected] )

Table of Contents

Spring 15s: 36 days (March 1st - unofficial start of the season for many teams)

Carolina Ruggerfest: 36 days (March 1st -2nd)

Gonzaga Classic: 78 days (April 12th)

Midwest Invitational: 92 days (April 26th)

Nationals Tournament: 118 days (May 22nd)

More leagues get rocking

  • Louisiana just got their season started this past week. More on that soon.

  • NorCal is also in full swing with their Single School league. We’ll have coverage of those games soon as well.

Next week we’ll get our first Northeast team action of the year, as Gregory the Great (PA) heads down to play Vienna (VA) in a cross-league game. (Sunday, Feb 2nd)

State playoffs ALREADY on the horizon.

  • North Carolina is on their 6th week of the season. That means there is only one more week of regular season play (next weekend) and then the State Playoffs begin February 7th.

  • The teams to watch: Hough, Charlotte Catholic, and South Meck. These three having risen to the top this year, with a big match between Hough and Charlotte Catholic planned for this upcoming Tuesday, January 28th, that will probably solidify the state tourney bracket.

“You just need more meaning for some of the stuff you end up doing in this sport. You do put your body in harm’s way, so you need a bigger purpose behind it.”

Matt Hawkins, Cathedral Catholic HC, talking about the importance of having traditions and legacy in your rugby program.

Oddball musings, induced by borderline hypothermia.

🏉 Let’s take a moment to welcome our Southern rugby friends to the party: the getting-tackled-into-icy-slush party. Nothing like laying in a snowy puddle under a ruck. Formative moments, my friends ❄️

🏉 The Grubber: It’s like the PR team for bad kicks got involved. “Let’s give it a name and pretend it’s a strategy.” Boom, the grubber.

🏉 Commentary weary: Can US rugby announcers please stop giving a 2nd grade rugby tutorial every single match? It’s not helping the sport grow. It just draws more attention to the fact that rugby isn’t too popular in the USA and makes the casual viewer think “nah I don’t feel like spending energy learning all these rules”. Just speak rugby. Tell the story and make the game FEEL compelling! That will draw people in and then they will learn the game.

That’s a wrap, gang!

Next week we’ll have more dope rugby stuff to share with you; scores, highlights, stories, RANKINGS UPDATES… all the goods.

If you like this content, share it with your friends! The easiest way is to copy this URL www.rugbyriot.com and text it to your pals.

Be well, ruck with gusto, and may your compression shorts always stay in place.
