πŸŸοΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ USA U19s are crushing it at the RAN tourney.

  • 59-0 over Trinidad & Tobago πŸ‘€ (Watch replay β€” starts at 1:26:00)

  • 31-0 over Jamaica πŸ‘€ (Watch replay β€” starts at 3:55:00)

  • 36-9 over Mexico πŸ‘€ (Watch replay β€” first match of the stream)

  • 33-3 over Cayman πŸ‘€ (Watch replay β€” starts at 7:38:00)

The U.S. boys are big, bad, and they’re ruining everybody’s day down in Mexico. Here’s a few notes on the first two days of games:

  • The speed and size is evident on film, but the USA team also has great rugby fundamentals. They’ve been bullies in the scrum, and their lineouts and mauls are smooth as butter.

  • A few recent HS grads got significant playing time: Quinn Miller (Charlotte Cardinals) and Mark French (St. Ignatius) both saw heavy minutes over the first two days. Miller has been a physical menaceβ€”he’s surprisingly active for a player of his stature. French has put in several good shifts at scrummyβ€”he delivers a clean ball and has a knack for sniffing out opponents’ set pieces.

  • Missing from the action has been Jameson Beatty (Charlotte Tigers). We’ve noticed him running the water onto the field and can only assume he must be dealing with an injury. Hoping to see him on the field soon.

  • A couple former SD Mustangs are raising hell out there too. Tyler Trower (2024) is a monster at prop, while Declan Cadden (2024) has been phenomenal at flyhalf.

  • Jayden Williams is another young standout. He was a 2024 grad at St. Edward (OH). His flanker work at RAN has been terrific.

159 points for…12 points against. That’s called dominance.

If we had any gripes about the U19s performance so far, it would be the frantic passing out wide and occasional lapses in support runners. As the commentator duly noted: β€œthey don’t need to rush it out wide so much.” But we’re picking nits. The boys have been exceptional at RAN and there’s no question they deserved the #1 seed.

Interesting note: Mexico scored the most points (9) against the USA boys β€” thanks in part to several US-based players like Thomas Parrott (Lamorinda Rugby), plus guys from Belmont Shore, Thunder, Back Bay, and SacAir.

πŸ‰Riot take: We’d love to see this USA U19s group play against elite competition. Some of these teams at RAN can’t even form a proper scrum...
In fairness, this was the only thing available on the calendar this year with the U20s International Cup getting a revamp for 2026.
Still, it’s good to see this squad gelling and winning. πŸ’ͺ

Next up: RAN finalsβ€”Saturday, July 12th

10:00 am β€” 5th place match β€” Bermuda vs Trinidad & Tobago
12:00 pm β€” 3rd place match β€” Mexico vs Cayman Islands
2:00 pm β€” Championship match β€” USA vs Jamaica

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈU18s continue rolling in Argentina
USA 63 β€” 7 Buenos Aires Academy

There was no stream for this one, but our folks on the ground tell us the U18s were genuinely dominant against the Buenos Aires academy team.

It was 28-7 at halftime β€” and that was just the beginning of the score-fest. The USA defense was connected and disciplined, while the offense got rolling early.

One thing we heard from everyone: the U18s’ communication took a big step forward in this game. This is a squad with serious on- and off-field chemistry.

The final score: USA 63-7 Buenos Aires.

Next up: the U18s will face Uruguay U18s β€” their first real national opponent. It’ll also serve as the curtain-raiser for the Uruguay vs Romania test match.

Last year, the USA U18s lost to Uruguay 20-10. Let’s see if they can flip the script this year!

When: Saturdayβ€”July 12th
Watch: If we find a link to this, we’ll share it on our Instagram.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Eagles set to face Spain

This will be a step up from playing Belgium last week β€” and it’s the final tune-up before the big England showdown next weekend.

We’re hoping the Eagles look sharper this week. Against Belgium, we pulled away for a win, but it wasn’t always pretty. We'd love to see them build phases with more authority and control the tempo better. Spain will bring more pace and structure than Belgium, so this should be a proper test.

πŸ‰Riot take: England will eat us alive next week if we don’t play with more juice.

⌚️When: Saturday, July 12thβ€”7:30 pm
πŸ“Ί Watch: Paramount+ is where you’ll find it.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ U23s take on Maties

The U23s are coming off two strong wins in South Africa and now face their toughest opponent yet.

The Maties are one of South Africa’s premier Uni sides, and they surely aren’t interested in letting the USA boys stroll through for a third straight win on their soil.

πŸ‰ Riot take: We’re curious to see how the USA roster is set up for this one β€” nothing announced as of this writing. This is a young U23 squad, and a big showing against the Maties would turn some heads across the rugby community.

Keep it up, boys!

β€œThe USA pack looks…SIZEABLE.”

Live commentator, upon seeing the U19s first scrum at the RAN tourney. Spoiler alert: The U19s have demolished the opposition at the scrum-down.

🦢Let’s talk pre-match footwear.

We’ve noticed a lot of players wearing Crocs before matches lately. It got us thinking, are Crocs in or out? They were sooo out for several years.

But Crocs also feel very rugby: Kinda chonky, super versatile, counter-culturalβ€”they're like the cauliflower ear of footwear. Lovable but a little eye-jarring.

Let’s stir up a little Croc controversy, shall we?

Do you wear Crocs before slapping on your cleats?

Oddball musings, induced by borderline hypothermia.

πŸ‰ This may be recency bias, but it feels like the USA pathways initiative is gaining steam. All three young U.S. squads are undefeated in international matches this summer. Sure, the competition hasn’t been against premier national sides, but the signs are there. If these young dudes can stay locked in, we could have something very special at the national level in a few years.

πŸ‰ Trying to watch all the rugby action is insane. Rugbypass, Paramount+, random YouTube channels, FloRugby, ESPN+, The Rugby Network. All these tabs got me feeling like a switchboard operator. Can we figure out a solution to the streaming chaos??

That’s a wrap, gang!

Next week we’ll have more dope rugby stuff to share with you; scores, highlights, stories… all the goods.

If you like this stuff, share it with your friends!

Be well, ruck with gusto, and may your compression shorts always stay in place.
