There are so many phenomenal athletes in this country… I’d love to show that we can play the type of rugby that they play overseas.”
đź‘€Sneak Peak: Next week we will be highlighting Charlotte Catholic before their second game of the NC season. We had a chance to chat with Coach Zehmke about his squad, their most exciting matchup this season, and more.
North Carolina Opening Weekend
South Meck got their season off to a solid start, defeating Clayton in a 35-0 game. here are some of the players and highlights of the game.
Man of the match: Aiden Gallant. “Gallant” indeed! Aiden was a force the entire game, galvanizing his team throughout the match with tremendous forward play from the prop position. He had the game’s first score (also the first try of South Meck’s season).
Quinn Miller (prop), Jack Flemings (inside center), Allan Dimivich (scrum-half), and Jackson Wilson (Fullback) also put in noteworthy performances, highlighted by their leadership and high work rate.
Impact player: Brody Evans (flanker) - who had been dealing with an injury - came off the bench and instantly raised a ruckus, scoring almost immediately and making his presence known. He also got a shout out from his coaches for his phenomenal defensive skills; great tackles and intensity chief among them.
South Meck had multiple players run it in for tries during this one: Aiden Gallant (1), Mac Howell (2), Jack Flemings (1), and Quinn Miller (1). Allan Diminich slotted all 5 conversion attempts as well, putting the cherry on top of an impressive season opener for South Meck.
It was a special day for Mac Howell and Henry Norman - this was their first game ever for South Meck. Judging by the coach’s comments, I think we’ll be hearing their names quite a bit this season.
Next up: Marvin Ridge, December 13th. This is a rematch of last year’s State Semi-Final. We expect a warm blooded affair. Stay tuned.

Elsewhere in NC, Charlotte Catholic took care of business, winning 35-0 against Myers Park. More on them next week.
Marvin Ridge likewise defeated Ardrey Kell with a scoreline of 35-0.
If you’re seeing a pattern here, it’s because NC caps the score at 35, it’s not just some wild coincidence that these games all had the same scoreline.

Oddball musings, induced by borderline hypothermia.
🏉 Rugby players everywhere watching NFL games: “DO A LATERAL!”
🏉 Bad business idea: Flavored mouth guards. i.e. You miss a tackle, you get the liverwurst mouthguard next practice. Score a try? Blue raspberry, baby. Wait…is this a GOOD business idea??
That’s a wrap, gang!
Next week, we are highlighting Charlotte Catholic and diving into new topics, including: Who has the advantage, Club teams or Single School?
